South Africa’s batting collapsed on day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong. At the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first but their batting shuttered for 248 only. At stumps, Bangladesh were on 7 without loss.

South Africa were not able to make the most of the start they had got. Openers made a promising start for the visitors, Dean Elgar (47) and Stlaan Van Zyl (34) added 58 runs for the first wicket in no time. Mahmudullah provided the first breakthrough for Bangladesh when Stlaan Van Zyl was caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Litton Das. Faf du Plessis and Dean Elgar were going strongly and they ensured that South Africa didn’t lose any more wickets before lunch. At lunch, the Proteas were one down for 104.

After the lunch break, Elgar and du Plessis started off well again and visitors were moving towards big score. However, SA lost two balls in the space of three balls after drinks in the afternoon session, with Dean Elgar (47) and Faf du Plessis (48). They shared a 78-run partnership before Elgar was caught by Das, at the second attempt, off left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and Du Plessis was trapped by lbw after an arm ball from Shakib Al Hasan skidded on.

South Africa went on tea at 165 for 3 with Hashim Amla and Temba Bavuma at the crease. But debutant, Mustafizur Rahman bowled an incredible over where South Africa lost three wickets in a space of four deliveries. The Proteas skipper, Hashim Amla was caught behind the stumps by Litton Das and JP Duminy was trapped in front of the wicket after a successful review. Quinton de Kock survived the hat-trick delivery but Rahman’s next delivery sent his off-stump for a walk. Temba Bavuma was watching the scene helplessly from the non-strike end. Temba replaced AB de Villiers in this batting line-up, was the last man to out for 54 as he became the fourth victim of Mustafizur. Jubair Hossain picked up three wickets as well. Shakib, Mahmudullah and Taijul Islam had one scalp each.

Steyn and Co. will have a tuff task in their hands on day 2 where pitch will be eased up for batting. They would like to restrict Bangladesh so that the game don’t go too far ahead from their reach.
