As India prepare to play their 500th Test, against New Zealand at Kanpur on Thursday, here’s a recap of some historic moments in India’s historic Test journey in recent years.

Dravid-Laxman’s Kolkata marathon: This remains on top of the list as Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman overcame adversity, and one of the strongest Aussie bowling line-up to turnaround the Eden Garden Test of 2001. The rest is history, in the true sense.

Virender Sehwag’s Multan magic: Laxman narrowly missed out on a triple hundred in the 2001 Kolkata Test. Sehwag created history by lofting Saqlain Mushtaq into the stands. He not only brought up his 300, but also finished off Saqlain’s career.

Harbhajan’s famous hat-trick: Till 2001, not a single Indian bowler had taken a hat-trick. That changed when Harbhajan had Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist lbw, and Sadagopan Ramesh took a brilliant catch close in to send back Shane Warne, and set off jubilation in the Indian camp.

Historic chase of 387: Played in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, an inspired India chased down 387 at Chepauk in Chennai, one of their favourite hunting grounds. Sachin Tendulkar delivered the victory with an unbeaten hundred.

Dravid-Laxman’s Adelaide delight: Dravid (233) and Laxman (148) frustrated Australia again during the famous Adelaide Test of 2003, which India went on to win in impressive fashion.
