Off-spinner Moeen Ali took a Test-best six wickets for 53 in 15 overs.
South Africa, England was dismissed in its second innings for 233. Combative batting by Bairstow, who had been dropped off a simple chance to Vernon Philander on seven, and tail-ender Wood helped England push its lead past 300 as South Africa’s bowlers struggled to match their early success.

England: 458/10 (105.3 ov) & 233/10(87.1 ov)

South Africa: 361/10 (105 ov) & 119/10(36.4 ov)

Result: England won by 211 runs
Bairstow and Wood shared a ninth-wicket partnership of 45 before the Durham paceman was bowled by Kagiso Rabada for 28 off 36 balls.
With last-man Anderson at the wicket, Bairstow reached his fifty before falling one run later, stumped by Quinton de Kock off Keshav Maharaj, who claimed his fourth wicket of the innings.
Moeen Ali and Liam Dawson produced one of the best spells of spin bowling as England humble South Africa by 211 runs in the first Test at Lord’s. With the win, England take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. Moeen finished with figures of 6 for 53 and Dawson picked up three wickets. South Africa did well to bowl out England for 233 in the second innings but that the only high point of the day for them. Their batsmen did not show any application and crumbled in the chase. Some bad shot selection from South Africa batsmen and good bowling from England spinners ended the game in four days.
