Shami, Ashwin star as India wrap up Indore Test by innings and 30 runs

A dominant India overcame a hapless Bangladesh by an innings and 130 runs to go 1-0 up in the two-match series at Indore on Saturday. The hosts needed only three days to wrap up the contest as Bangladesh folded up for 213 in the second innings.

Earlier, Indian skipper Virat Kohli declared India’s innings on their overnight score of 493 for 6. Mohammed Shami (4/31) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3/42) then ran through the Bangladesh line-up, as the visitors were cleaned up for 213 in 69.2 overs. With this triumph, India registered their sixth successive Test win, equally the record set by the MS Dhoni-led side in 2013.

The pacers got the early breakthroughs for India, Umesh Yadav cleaning up Imrul Kayes, and Ishant Sharma then getting through the defence of Shadman Islam. Shami added to Bangladesh’s misery, dismissing skipper Mominul Haque (7) and Mohammad Mithun (18). Bangladesh went to lunch having crumbled to 60 for 4.

Post lunch, Shami got another breakthrough, having Mahmudullah caught for 15, as Bangladesh lost half their side for 72. Some resistance came at last in the form of Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das, who added 63 for the sixth wicket.

Ashwin then joined the party for India, having Das caught and bowled for 35. The experienced Rahim however kept the Indian attack at bay, and he found support in Mehidy Hasan. Yadav broke the stubborn partnership when he bowled Hasan for 38

Rahim’s vigil then ended when Ashwin dismissed him for 64 from 150 balls. The off-spinner wrapped up the innings by dismissing last man Ebadat Hossain for 1.

Bangladesh were earlier bowled out for a paltry 150 in the first innings. Shami picked up three wickets while Ishant, Umesh and Ashwin got two each. Mayank Agarwal led India’s reply with a fantastic double hundred.

The second Test of the series will be played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata from November 22, which will be the historic day-night encounter.
