Pakistan's spinners took eight of nine wickets to fall as the West Indies were reduced to 209 for nine at stumps on the opening day of the first Test in Providence, Guyana.

After the home side won the toss and chose to bat, the tourists responded by striking regularly on a pitch that took turn almost straightaway.

They made the bold but not entirely unexpected move of opening with off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez, who swiftly broke through Devon Smith's defences, bowling the left-hander for 13.

Lendl Simmons (49) and Darren Bravo (25) steered the West Indies to lunch without further loss during a turgid session of play as Pakistan's slow bowlers kept a lid on the scoring.

Left-arm quick Wahab Riaz had a lengthy wait to bowl his first ball and he picked up the wicket of Bravo who was trapped in front playing across the line.

The West Indies then lost Simmons when, on 41, he was hit on the knee by Riaz and received lengthy treatment before departing. That left Guyanese pair Ramnaresh Sarwan (23) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (27) in the middle and they forged a useful partnership before on the stroke of tea Sarwan edged Abdur Rehman to wicket-keeper Mohammad Salman.

Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal then had both Brendan Nash and Carlton Baugh trapped in front for four and five respectively while Darren Sammy played a cameo innings of 14 in 26 balls before skying a catch to Umar Akmal when his side needed him to show the same sort of resilience that Chanderpaul was displaying at the other end.

Chanderpaul's vigil was ended when he was bowled by the impressive Ajmal, who struck again to remove Simmons, this time for good when he was trapped in front one run short of what would have been a maiden Test half-century, and Ajmal finished the day with four for 63.

After Ravi Rampaul (14) was trapped in front by Hafeez, Kemar Roach (16 not out) and Devendra Bishoo (10 not out), who, like Salman, is making his Test debut, took the West Indies to stumps with no further loss of wicket.
