The fifth season of the DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 Tournament will begin on the 4th of April according to a latest BCCI and IPL Committee release. The tournament will comprise of 76 matches with a total of nine teams taking part.
The IPL-5 or the DLF IPL 2012 tournament will kick off at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk in Chennai with the defending Champions - Chennai Super Kings clashing with Mumbai Indians, who were the Champions League T20 winners last season. The Final of this 53-day long tournament will be played on the 27th of May with the venue also being the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Although there was a proposal from the Sri Lankan Cricket Board to host few of the games in Sri Lanka, the BCCI and the IPL governing body has ignored the request.
Compared to the IPL-4, the IPL-5 this season will have a team lesser and a couple of more matches added. Kochi Tuskers Kerala which was a new team added to the IPL last year has been disqualified from this fifth edition for breaching its terms of agreement according to the BCCI. There is a note from the BCCI which says that the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune which will be the home ground for the Pune Warriors will go onto host eight matches of the IPL-5 subject to the stadium’s completion. Pune Warriors which made its IPL debut last season had to settle with the Dr.DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai as its home ground.
Unlike the IPL-4 which saw the 10 teams divided into two groups, the IPL-5 with 9 teams taking part in the tournament has each team plays against the other twice - one at home and one away. There will be 72 matches in the league phase as a result followed up by two Qualifiers, Eliminator Match and the Final.
