Sri Lanka had a memorable run in the first round matches, which eased their qualification path. They defeated Namibia by seven wickets and Ireland by 70 runs before thumping Netherlands by eight wickets, cleaning them up for 44.
Bangladesh did not have it so easy. They went down to Scotland by six runs in their first Round 1 encounter, which made their progression path difficult. However, they lifted themselves in time to get the better of Oman by 26 runs. Bangladesh then secured their place in the Super 12s, crushing Papua New Guinea by 84 runs.
Impressive off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana and leggie Wanindu Hasaranga were the stars for Sri Lanka against Netherlands apart from pacer Lahiru Kumara. However, they won’t have it as easy against Bangladesh, who are much better players of spin. Also, the batting for Sri Lanka remains a concern. They are yet to come up with a solid batting show. Even against Netherlands, they lost two wickets chasing 45.
Shakib Al Hasan has been the star performer for Bangladesh in their last two wins, impressing with both bat and ball. He has taken it upon himself to guide the team through as senior pro after the reversal against Scotland. Mahmudullah scored a solid fifty against PNG while Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan have been in impressive form.
