Rahane was particularly severe on anything short as he hooked and pulled whenever England bowler tried to test him with the short-pitched stuff.

England were visibly taken aback by Rahane's aggression but Jade Dernbach's introduction into the attack got India their first breathrough.

A disguised slower delivery in the fifth over bowled by Dernbach got Parthiv (10) to miscue an attempted straight drive that was easily taken by skipper Stuart Broad.

But in the next over bowled by Broad, Rahane first pulled and then came down the wicket to hit the England skipper for two consecutive fours as India reached 49/1 at the end of six overs of powerplay.

Earlier in the evening, the whites of Test cricket gave way to coloured clothing as Rahul Dravid made his Twenty20 debut.

"Dravid is an exciting cricketer. He will enjoy the game today, no pressure and he can go and enjoy himself," said Dhoni when asked if Dravid is making his debut. Dravid will also retire from T20 cricket on Wednesday.

Alongside Dravid, batsman Ajinkya Rahane will make his international debut for India. Parthiv Patel, Munaf Patel and Vinay Kumar are in the side as well, with R Ashwin being the only specialist spinner.

For England, their T20 skipper Stuart Broad confirmed Alex Hales and Jos Butler have been awarded their first international caps. Ben Stokes and Steven Finn miss out.
