DLF IPL 2012: Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings by 2 wickets in Match 49 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Hosts Mumbai Indians stunned Chennai Super Kings in a last ball thriller at the Wankhede Stadium courtesy of Dwayne Smith, who was only playing his first match of IPL 5. Needing 16 to win from the final over bowled by Ben Hilfenhaus, Mumbai Indians got just the one run off the first three balls! Dwayne Smith on strike with 14 to win from three balls went onto smash a six, four and a last ball four to clinch a sensational 2-wicket victory for Mumbai Indians.

Batting first after losing the toss, Chennai Super Kings posted an impressive 173 for 8. Opener Murali Vijay found some form to top score with 41 from 29 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes and was followed up by Dwayne Bravo who came up with 40 from 33 balls (4 fours and a six). Skipper MS Dhoni chipped in with a crucial 25 from 15 balls with a couple of fours and a six. For the Mumbai Indians, RP Singh with 3 for 28 and Lasith Malinga with 3 for 25 did a great job with the ball.

Dwayne SmithIn the run chase, Mumbai Indians were easing through thanks to a great partnership of 126 for the second wicket between Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma. Tendulkar finally came good in IPL 5 with a magical knock of 74 from just 44 balls with 11 fours and a six. Rohit Sharma scored a fluent 60 from 46 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes but like Sachin lost his wicket at the wrong time. When Rohit Sharma lost his wicket, Mumbai Indians needed 25 more runs to get from two overs with five wickets in hand. Thanks to Dwayne Smith’s blinder of 24* (from 9 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes), Mumbai Indians got home in the final ball. He also got the Man of the Match award ahead of Tendulkar.
