Sri Lanka are staring at an innings and also a series defeat at Newlands in Cape Town after a dramatic batting collapse on the third day’s play of the Third and Final Test. The tourists have lost as many as 12 wickets today to leave South Africa moments away from wrapping up the match on the fourth day.

At the close of the third day’s play, Sri Lanka are at 138 for 4 in 53 overs after following on in their second innings. The three big players of the Sri Lankan team – Skipper Dilshan and former Skippers Sangakkara and Jayawardene are all back in the pavilion. The Lankans are left with Thilan Samaraweera (19*) and Angelo Mathews (28*) at the crease and followed up by the last specialist batsman in Wicket Keeper Dinesh Chandimal. An innings defeat seems inevitable as the Lankans are still having a huge deficit of 203 runs to clear.

The visitors resuming play on Day 3 at a promising 149 for 2 in their first innings were shot out for just 239 this morning as the fast bowling pair of Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn ran through their batting line-up taking three wickets each Morne Morkel and leggie Imran Tahir contributed with two wickets each as South Africa bowled out the Lankans in 73.5 overs and went on to enforce a follow on.
