New Zealand’s opening batsman Brendon McCullum has been fined for showing dissent in the First Test at Hyderabad. The Kiwi batsman was walking off furiously after being given out lbw during the second innings on the fourth day’s play by Umpire Steve David despite getting an inside edge onto the pad off an inswinger from Umesh Yadav. McCullum couldn’t refrain himself from showing his anger at the Umpire’s decision.

The ICC has said that McCullum was given an official reprimand for standing his ground for an extended period of time and then showing his bat to Umpire Steve Davis who gave an lbw decision against him and then shaking his head while walking back to the pavilion. There is no fine imposed on McCullum though as he escaped with just an official reprimand because of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Brendon McCullumICC Match Referee Chris Broad has been quoted to have said: “I understand New Zealand had an uphill task and Brendon was leading his side’s fight back. But his actions, after he was given out, were unacceptable as the ICC code clearly states that whatever may be the situation, you have to always respect and accept an umpire’s decision.

“Brendon is one of the senior most professionals on the circuit and as such, there is a greater degree of responsibility on his shoulders. Unfortunately, his actions today went beyond what would be deemed acceptable.”
