IPL 2011 IPL Kochi Team News: Former Sri Lanka skipper and ace batsman Mahela Jayawardene has been chosen the captain of the Kochi team in the fourth edition of the IPL.

Former Sri Lanka skipper and ace batsman Mahela Jayawardene has been chosen the captain of the Kochi team in the fourth edition of the IPL.

Kochi had bought Jayawardene for $ 1.5 million at the IPL auction in January 2011 that took place in Bangalore. Jayawardene had represented the Kings XI Punjab in the first three editions of the IPL and was their best batsman in the previous season with 439 runs with a highest score of 110*.

With the inclusion of the Kochi and Pune franchises, the IPL 2011 will have ten teams altogether. The Kochi franchise was a doubtful starter after the IPL Governing Council had served a termination notice on October 27, 2010. However, things worked out well for the franchise and its participation was all-cleared on December 5, 2010.

Kochi have some of the best T20 talents in their ranks with the likes of Brendon McCullum, Brad Hodge, Owais Shah and Ravindra Jadeja among others. Jayawardene will also have the services of his countrymen Muttaih Muralitharan and Thisara Perera and will be hoping to create some upsets in Kochi’s maiden campaign.
