Indian opening batsman GautamGambhir on Tuesday ruled out of the one-off T20 and the following ODI series against England after he failed to recover from concussion.

The left-handed batsman fell, with his head colliding the ground, during the third day of the Oval Test and had complained of failing to sight the ball since then.

Confirming the news, team manager ShivlalYadav said, Gambhir went to an eye specialist on Tuesday and "it seems he continues to suffer from concussion".

His condition deteriorated further after he was hit on the helmet by Stuart Broad's bouncer on the final day of the same Test.

For the last few days, despite speculations that Gambhir would be returning home, he continued to travel with the Indian squad for the three practice matches.

He, however, did not play in any of the three wins the visitors registered.

No replacement has been named yet, confirmed Yadav, but Gambhir's injury has opened the gate for young batsman AjinkyaRahane, who is certain to make his debut on Wednesday as SachinTendulkar will also not play in Manchester Twenty20.

Indian skipper MS Dhoni termed it as 'big loss', saying his absence will be felt during the upcoming matches.

"It's a big loss. He has done really well not only as an opener but also when he batted at number three when Sehwag and Tendulkar were opening the innings. He also plays spin very well," said Dhoni.

India lost six regular players VirenderSehwag, GautamGambhir, Ishant Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan due to injuries in the four-match Test series which India lost 0-4.
