Zimbabwe piled up their record one-day total in another dominant batting display against Kenya in the second ODI in Mombasa as they powered to 351 for 7. Stuart Matsikenyeri provided the major contribution in the top order with a well-paced, career-best 90 and found strong support from Malcolm Waller who hit his maiden ODI half-century. But for the second game running it was Elton Chigumbura who provided the real fireworks with a 29-ball 68.

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat against Zimbabwe in the first of three one-day internationals in Mirpur. Bangladesh fielded the same side that squandered a superb shot to beat Sri Lanka in the final of the tri-series, and there were no changes to the Zimbabwean outfit that was crushed by Sri Lanka in their last ODI. Mohammad Ashraful, Bangladesh's captain, said on the eve of this match that he expected a 3-0 sweep. The last time these two sides met, Bangladesh were upset, but the hosts were able to raise their game when it mattered.

A disciplined performance in the field from Zimbabwe gave Sri Lanka more than the occasional fright, but the visitors eventually crept over the line by two wickets in Harare. Jehan Mubarak calmed the situation with an unbeaten 57, but Sri Lanka made very heavy weather of reaching 147. Zimbabwe showed plenty of spirit as Tawanda Mupariwa snapped up three wickets and there was some impressive spin bowling.

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has singled out his team's batting as the main worry ahead of the three-ODI series against Zimbabwe, beginning in Mirpur on January 19. Bangladesh were bowled out for 152 in the tri-series final against Sri Lanka, and fell short chasing 205 in the first game against Zimbabwe.
