Tests 1-50: (November 1989-March 1997): After his first 50 Tests, Tendulkar averaged 50 having scored 3438 runs with an amazing 11 hundreds. He had a highest score of 179, which came against the West Indies at Nagpur in 1994. Incredibly, eight of his 11 hundreds during his period came away from home – two in Australia during the 1992 tour, three in England, two in South Africa and one in Sri Lanka. His average in most countries while touring was also top class. Tendulkar averaged 46 in Australia after five Tests, 75 in England after six games, and 101 in Sri Lanka after three matches. At home as well Tendulkar performed well, averaging 52 after 18 matches. His only struggles were in Pakistan and New Zealand, where he averaged in the mid-30s and did not get a hundred after playing four games each. But those were during the early phase of his career.

Tests 51-100: (March 1997-September 2002): In the 50 matches during this period, Tendulkar scored 4967 runs with an astonishing 19 hundreds at a brilliant average of 65. This was among the most profitable phases in Tendulkar’s career, a time when he was at his peak. During these 50 Tests, Tendulkar got 11 of his tons at home. He got one hundred each in Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies, and three in Sri Lanka. Tendulkar averaged 71 at home after 24 Tests, 46 in Australia in three Tests, 67 in England (four Tests), and 46 in West Indies after 8 Tests.

Tests 101-150: (October 2002-August 2008): During this period, Tendulkar’s record dipped, but remained impressive nonetheless. In 50 Tests, he notched up 3472 runs averaging 47 with nine hundreds. Three of these hundreds came in Australia, including that unbeaten 241 at Sydney during the 2004 tour. Three centuries came in Bangladesh, where he achieved his Test best of 248 not out. Of the remaining hundreds, two came in India and one in Pakistan. Tendulkar averaged 73 in eight matches in Australia during this phase, but struggled in most other countries, including at home where he averaged 37 after 21 matches. He averaged 38 in England (3 Tests), 25 in New Zealand (2 Tests) and only 16 in Sri Lanka (3 Tests).

Tests 151-199 (October 2008-present): In his last 49 Tests, Tendulkar has managed 3790 runs averaging 52 with 12 hundreds. Six of these hundreds have come at home, two in Bangladesh, two in South Africa and one each in New Zealand and South Africa. Tendulkar however failed to get a single ton during the two disastrous tours to England and Australia, which India lost 4-0. He averaged in the 30s in both the series, a clear sign of his decline. Tendulkar averaged 47 at home after 31 Tests. In 2012 though his overall average was 24 while this year his average has been a disappointing 29.
