A big controversy erupted during the fifth one-day international between England and Sri Lanka at Edgbaston as Lankan spinner Sachithra Senanayake Mankaded Jos Buttler for backing up too far at the non-striker’s end. The umpires asked Angelo Mathews whether he wanted to go ahead with the appeal; the Lankans decided to stick to the stance, upsetting the England camp, and the series thus ended on a sour note, with the English skipper once again raising the spirit of cricket debate. Here’s a few other instances when bowlers ‘Mankaded’ batsmen in international cricket.

Kapil Dev Mankading Peter Kirsten in an ODI in Port Elizabeth, 1992: As far asIndiansare concerned, this is the most famous of all instances. Kapil had warned Kirsten a couple of times for backing up too far. The South African, however, did not mend his ways, and Kapil eventually decided to Mankad him. The batsman was disgusted with the decision, and what was a friendship tour turned a little sour.

Greg Chappell Mankading Brian Luckhurst in an ODI at Melbourne in 1975: This happened much before Chappell’s involvement in the underarm controversy. In this match, played on the New Year on 1975, he Mankaded English batsman Luckhurst although England went on to win the game.

Ewen Chatfield Mankading Derek Randall in a Test at Christchurch in 1978: TheNew Zealand fast bowler, who was one of Chetan Sharma’s victims during the famous hat-trick in the 1987 World Cup, Mankaded England’s middle order batsman Derek Randall. The incident took place in the second Test of the series between England and New Zealand at Christchurch. England, however, ended up victors in the Test, registering a triumph by 174 runs.

Dipak Patel Mankading Grant Flower during an ODI at Harare, 1992: Patel is best remembered for opening the bowling in spite of being a spinner at the 1992 World Cup. But, many may not be aware that he Mankaded former Zimbabwe batsman Grant Flower during the second one-day international of the series at Harare in 1992. The game wasn’t memorable for the minnows as they went on to lose it by four wickets.

Mankaded, but not Mankaded: During the tri-series in Australia in 2012, where India lost almost everything, Ravichandran Ashwin ‘Mankaded’ Lahiru Thirimanne during a game at Gabba in Brisbane. As always, the umpires queried the skipper, on this occasion Virender Sehwag, whether he wanted to go ahead with the appeal. After consulting Sachin Tendulkar, Sehwag decided against it, and Thirimanne batted on. He scored 62 in the match, and Lanka went on to win the game by 51 runs.

Did you know? The term Mankaded is derived from Vinoo Mankad’s surname. In the Test match between India and Australia played at Sydney in 1947, Mankad ran out Aussie batsman Bill Brown, after he had backed up too far at the non-striker’s end. Such a mode of dismissal has since been called Mankading or Mankaded.
