Chris Martin, the New Zealand new ball bowler in Tests has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket today at an age of 38. Martin who has been a regular in the Test team especially at home is known more for his lack of batting skills with a record 36 ducks although West Indian fast bowling great Courtney Walsh has a few more than him, to be precise 43.

More than his bowling stints, it is the batting figures of Chris Martin that make interesting reading. The New Zealander had scored only 123 runs in 104 Test innings with an average of 2.36 and a highest score of 12*. It is the rare batting stats for Martin as one doesn’t come across such genuine no.11 these days in international cricket.

On a serious note, Chris Martin is the third highest wicket taker in Tests for the Kiwis after Sir Richard Hadlee and Daniel Vettori. Martin retires with 233 scalps in Test Cricket with a decent average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 60.1. The tall seamer made his Test debut in 2000 and last played at Cape Town against South Africa in 2013. There is little to talk about his limited overs career with just the 20 ODIs and 6 T20Is to his name.
