Soumya Sarkar guides Bangladesh to a historic series win against South Africa. Bangladesh chased down the target of 168 runs with 83 balls to spare and 9 wickets left.

Bangladesh restricted South Africa to a modest total of 168 runs in a rain affected game of 40 over. On the way, both Shakib-al-Hasan and Masrafe Mortaza picked up their 200th ODI wickets. Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar added a partnership of 154 runs for the first wicket and in the process Sarkar registered the fastest fifty for Bangladesh against South Africa in just 41 balls.

Earlier in the day, South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first. Quinton de Kock extended his bad run as Mustafizur Rahman bowled him with a delivery angling in. Amla and du Plessis tried to play cautiously but the introduction of Shakib in the sixth over produced another wicket for Bangladesh. Faf tried to play against the spin towards mid-wicket and only he managed to top edge that. Soon after that, Amla was caught behind to hand Shakib his 200th ODI wicket. Mahumudullah too joined the party with claiming the wicket of Rilee Rossouw when Rossouw lost his balance in trying to play the pull shot. Duminy joined Miller when South Africa were in deep trouble with four down at just 50 runs on the board. Miller used the sweep shot to good effect and Duminy played the waiting game. South Africa were 78 for 4 when rain interrupted the game. The game resumed after the delay of 2 hours and 55 minutes and Miller was caught by Sabbir Rahman at backward point off Mortaza. South Africa looked to accelerate but lost wickets in tandem. Duminy and Farhan Behardien added 36 runs for the sixth wicket. All South Africa could manage was 168 runs in 40 overs at loss of 9 wickets.

Defending a modest score, none of the South African bowled could find the right line and length. They were guilty of bowling either too short or too full. Tamim and Sarkar both were very comfortable against both spin and pace. Tamim played the cut shots and on-drive very gracefully whereas Sarkar was the main aggressor. Sarkar fifty came off Morkel when he eased the ball through short-fine-leg. It took just 41 balls for him to complete his fifty but on the other end Tamim was happy to just give him the strike and watch the moment from the other end. Tamim brought up his fifty off 70 deliveries with a single. In search of century, Sarkar chipped Tahir straight to Amla at short cover. But Tamim and Litton Das ensured that Bangladesh wouldn’t lose any more wickets and win the match by 9 wickets.
