India’s woes on a day they were bundled out for 36 by Australia at Adelaide worsened as experienced pacer Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the Test series with a fracture on his arm. During India’s disastrous batting outfit in the second innings at Adelaide, Shami was struck on the right arm by a bouncer from Pat Cummins.

India skipper Virat Kohli, during the post-match conference had stated that Shami was in extreme pain and scans were conducted on him to check the extent of the injury. "No news on Shami, he is going for a scan now. Was in a lot of pain, could not even lift his arm. We will probably know in the evening what happens."

Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood, who claimed 5 for 8 to leave India stunned, admitted that India would find it hard to replace Shami in case he is unavailable, terming him a class bowler.

"It is obviously a blow, we gonna see how bad it was. He will undergo scans to see if there is any fracture or bruising. We wanna find out how much damage is done," Hazlewood had said during the post-match press conference.

"He is a class-bowler and he showed this in the game. So India might have to dig deeper in their arsenal to try and cover and him but we probably expect him to play, I am not sure how bad the injury is," Hazlewood added.

Having begun the day on 9 for 1, with a lead of 62, India could only add a further 27 runs to his score for the loss of eight wickets while Shami returned retired hurt.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane fell without scoring while Virat Kohli, Mayank Agarwal and Wriddhiman Saha all fell cheaply as India had a bizarre day out in the middle.

Having managed only 36, Australia were set a target of 90 for victory. Joe Burns roared back to form with an unbeaten 51 while Matthew Wade hammered a quick 33 as the Aussies took a 1-0 lead in the most spectacular fashion.
