Mohammad Kaif announced his retirement from cricket on Friday, nearly 12 years after he last played for India. Kaif chose the history day of July 13, the day he led India to the Natwest triumph 16 years ago

Kaif played 13 Tests and 125 ODIs for India, and will be remembered as one of the finest fielders India has ever produced.

“I'm writing to you today to announce my retirement from all forms of first-class cricket,” Kaif told acting president C.K. Khanna and acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary in an email.

“I am retiring today as it's been 16 years since the historic NatWest Trophy win in which I was glad to play my part, and I'd like to remember that as I bow out,” he further wrote.

Kaif led India to the 2000 U-19 World Cup, a tournament which also featured Yuvraj Singh. He was also part of the 2003 World Cup team that made it to the final.
